Packed like sardines

Lauren and I have been wanting to go visit Jen's twins and figured it would be better to go together since kids aren't allowed to visit in the nursery that aren't siblings. We were all ready to go. Lauren had called to tell me she could fit 3 carseats in the back of her car (a subaru outback). It was a tight squeeze and Will and Rory were not having any part of it, but Ella enjoyed the entertainment in the back! Unfortunately that was were our planning skills ended. We neglected to call Jen to see if it was convenient for us to visit that day. It wasn't! So we went to the zoo again instead!

We got to see the baby giraffe lay down to eat! He wasn't quite tall enough to eat from the trees but too tall to reach the grass! Smart little guy...

At the lion exhibit, there is a safari jeep crashed into the glass so the kids can sit inside and see. Ella was very excited to be able to climb in with the big kids this time.

First Word?

I'm not sure if "hi" counts as a first word or not. She has been saying it for a while but now it definitely seems there is meaning behind it. She will say "hi" to everyone we see everywhere... She is actually pulling on my leg right now saying "hi. hi. hi" It is hard to catch her doing things on video because all she wants is to get the video camera, but here she is saying "hi" and waving.

It looks like Julie had more fun than both Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. Mission Accomplished!

no more moms

Our moms left and Julie "opened" all her gifts, well she looked at them more closely... Her mom gave her some flannel pajamas to balance things out a little and wrote a great poem about flannel pajamas!

Next up was dinner, and then the bar. Here is Julie, after she had talked to policeman into letting her sit in the back of the car. He did at one point ask her if she wanted to hold both his gun and his rifle. Her response was "I don't think that's safe officer, but I'll hold your flashlight."

Here we are at the end of the night. I don't think we've ever both had our eyes open at an end of the night picture!

Bachelorette weekend

Here is Julie making her grand entrance at her bachelorette party! She was completely surprised as to where she was going. All she new was that she needed a bathing suit and clothes to wear out. We staying in Old Lyme at my Aunt Chris' beach house which is right next to the Pavillion beach bar. We didn't actually even need to step foot into that place since we were so close we could hear all the music from our private beach and use a clean bathroom! But still people watch and make total fun of the "Jersey shore'esque" scene that was all around us.

Julies underwear drawer got a real upgrade! You're welcome, Baer! The lingerie did make for nice decorations!

Here is all the gang that hung out at the beach for the day. Julies mom and my mom came to check things out and make sure we were behaving.

Nanny Harris had asked us a while ago to take some pictures of her horse, Winnie. And we finally remembered. We now have a grand plan to take more pictures when the leaves have changed colors and all that, but these are the best two. Here is Winnie.

And here is the barn that Papa Harris built. Unfortunately the barn may need to be moved when the new powerlines come through, so we need to get some better pictures of it taken. I think it would be cool to take one from every season from the same spot!

Our Family Love Tree- a melding of several traditions.

Most of you have probably heard about Kate and Colin's proposal involving a tree that they planted together early in their relationship, the love tree. But unfortunately, when Colin went to propose to Kate by that tree years later, it was gone....

At the wedding, the grooms father gave a lovely speech explaining our gifts, a Japanese Maple Sapling. He told a story about how he and his wife were given a tree when they bought their first home and they had purchased trees when each of their children were born. And when they graduated college they gave everyone saplings from their trees. So now it was the wedding day, and they were again giving tree saplings.

If you look closely, there is a tree in front of Ellas feet. Another tradition, Lauren and Ryan planted a tree at the Teaticket house the year William was born and every year they take a family photo in front of it (somehow I am usually the lucky person to take the photo of them).

So we think that these are all wonderful things, and we now had a tree, and Ella isn't 1 yet so we are all set right. Well except that we don't have anywhere to plant the tree. Thankfully Nates parents are good sports and pretty laid back about the layout of their yard, and we also willing to water the new sapling for us! (and I can't lie, his dad planted the tree for us while we watched...) The plan is that we will transplant the tree when we buy a house... hopefully this will happen before the tree is too big! We'll see- though I have a feeling we will always be welcome to take a picture there with the tree...

update on the tree- it is doing well and there is a wild turkey that has shown an interest in it...

While we were at the wedding, Ella stayed with Suzie (and Kate and Colin). Ella loves dogs equally as much as she loves other babies! Whenever her eye would catch suzie, she would get a huge grin on her face and try to go get her.

"oooh a doggie, I better go touch it!"

Ella loved Suzies tags on her collar! Suzie was extremely tolerant of Ella's "petting" and poking. She would even stay out of the way while Ella was eating. And I was equally as surprised with how gentle Ella was with touching Suzie. And the dog was so motivating that Ella took her first many steps while we were at their house. 8 total so far!

Wedding number 2

We went to one of my friends from PT school's weddings in Hartford and it seemed like a great time to try our new flipvideo camera. Our DSLR is too big to fit in a purse and since we weren't going to know anyone else there to take pictures of, we didn't think it was worth it to bring. Plus it seemed like a good way to try out our new toy. So here is a little video I made of the wedding.

I tried to upload it to blogger, but it was taking way too long!!!

my little helper

She helps with mixing...

She helps with the trash...

She helps with the groceries...

She helps with the dishes...

She has helped with the toilet too, but that was too disgusting to take a picture of!

Infant Massage

Ella is a little old to be going to infant massage class I know, but 2 of my friends are getting certified and they needed more people to be part of their class in order to complete their certification, so Ella and I are going to 5 weeks of infant massage. We have been to 3 weeks and haven't been kicked out yet! We get differing amounts of massaging done each week. It's not that she doesn't like the massage- she actually loves the belly and chest part, but she is way more interested in watching the other babies and teachers and dolls so usually she is standing up and I am trying to do the strokes on her anyway...

The main event!

Kids and dads. Cute!

The baptism was a pretty long ordeal with Ella. It started with the regular Sunday mass on Quantico Base which was held in an auditorium. Thankfully there were cupholders at each seat and Ella amused herself by putting her cup and toys in and our of all the cupholders. She was pretty squirmy at the end but this is usually par for the course with her these days at church anyway.

Next up was the donut and coffee break. By some Godfather baptism miracle, none of Ellas donut got on Nate's clothes!

The actual baptism was a private service in the chapel which was lovely. The priest was funny and told some lawyer jokes instead of giving the sermon again. There seemed to have been somewhat of an accident when the priest poured the water over Henry's head. I think the baby moved and the water went all over his face, in his eyes etc. That is why everyone is laughing in this picture!

Didn't bother Henry one bit though!

Here is Nate performing his one and only duty. He did such a great job that the priest had him do it again so we could get more pictures.

Ella pretty much had free reign of the chapel since I was trying to take pictures. She had fun though and was playing peek'a'boo with Henry's cousins, Ben and JP. It was a very nice service and day though I can't say I'll be bringing Ella somewhere that she needs to be quiet for 3ish hours again anytime soon...

Camping Preparations

Nate finally got to hold Henry- his soon to be Godson. They seemed to enjoy each other.

This trip was not just about Henry though. Nate and Mike have been planning a week long hike coming up in September (Melissa and I are as surprised as you that this is actually going to happen!) . They wanted to practice setting up their tent..... it looks pretty small.

At least we know they'll be nice and warm! We fired off all questions we could think of involving what they are going to eat, where they are going to camp etc and they seemed to have acceptable answers to all our questions, so.... I guess they have actually planned this, and I guess they are actually going!

we laughed at them while they set the tent up (twice because of user error) and this luna moth was flying around the light under the porch. It was a little creep so Nate looked it up on his phone and apparently it is the logo for the sleep drug "lunesta" as it only comes out at night. It also only lives for 7 days and we learned the next morning that we were correct in our hypothesis that this moth was on its 7th day of life already... On a side note- I have been having dreams about this moth!

National Zoo

Saturday was a beautiful sunny day, not too humid. It was the prefect day to go outside. So we (and everyone else ) decided to go to the national zoo. We knew it was going to be busy when the parking lot was full but luckily we found some rock star street parking that was really close by. Nate, who as I have mentioned before HATES crowds of people and also getting his picture taken was even willing to pose in the zoo sign! Mike must have a pleasant effect on his demeanor- I would have said "calming" but there is nothing "calm" about Nate and Mike...

Most of the animals (and baby Henry) were sleeping so there wasn't much to see, but Ella got a good look at the elephant who we happened to see right as they put his food out. He came barreling down his little walkway to get his leaves as fast as he could!

Here are Nate and Ella watching to elephants!

There was quite a long line to see the giant pandas. We walked in the expresslane just to get a quick peek. Everyone else was wondering why so many people wanted to see the pandas- like what is the big deal? But I think that the national zoo and the san diego zoo are the only zoos in the US that have pandas. Now I didn't find that to be a reason to wait in line for an hour to look at them, but it was pretty cool to see them anyway.

What was Ellas favorite part of the zoo? I think it was lunch and playing peek'a'boo with Mike's baseball hat!

Leavin' on a Jet Plane

Ella went on her second trip requiring air travel last weekend. We were all traveling to Woodbridge, VA to see the Bloomrose family for baby Henry's baptism. Ella was great on the flight even though it was right at bedtime. She was trying to flop around to get comfortable to fall asleep, but no luck there. The flight was only an hour, so she was pretty easy to entertain. Getting the rental car however was another story. We had prepaid, and requested a carseat, and called prior to our flight to confirm the carseat in order to try and speed things up. But of course, Budget car rental wants us to upgrade to a "more roomy and safer car". Nate and I decline and look at each other knowing that there is definitely not a car waiting for us with a carseat installed and ready to go. So how we have a really tired baby who is ready to go to sleep and are walking around the 95 degree garage with all our luggage looking for the rental car. We find the car, a very nice nissan versa and there is NO carseat in it. So now Nate leaves me with all our stuff and Ella to go find someone to get us a carseat. A very nice employee did in fact go out of his way to find and help Nate install the carseat and we were on our way... getting the rental car took about 90 minutes... But on the plus side, we were so late there was no more DC traffic and we made it to there house in about 30 minutes!

Henry was sleeping for the night when we got there, so they met in the morning. We have video of their meeting, but as you can see I am wearing my pajamas and so it will not be posted, ever, to the blog. Henry liked me right away, I think a kinship formed quickly because I was also wearing glasses. Ella was very interested in the baby and in his glasses.

This picture pretty much sums up what it was like when both the kids were awake. Henry was watching whatever Ella was doing either on someones lap or in his bumbo. She was just moving around like a tornado completely oblivious that he was a living, breathing actual baby and not just a cool toy.

Next up is the lackluster "dining room". Any ideas for paint colors are welcome- it will just be those 2 small walls, and the aqua kitchen is staying. We have some pictures from Napa that we plan on hanging there and are taking down the 2 shelves. We have a new table coming, and the shelves are coming down. We are also getting a new light fixture of some sort. It is pretty boring over there... too much brown for me- brown wood, brown walls.... BORING!

Home IMprovement Update

Here is the living room....
